Cinematic Los Angeles: a photography essay

This series presents images taken at various intersections in Los Angeles that I believe embody the essence of urban life. These intersections serve as meeting points where we pause, forced to observe our surroundings from the confines of our cars. They have an inherent tension in the quiet moments before the traffic lights change. Remarkably, all of the locations presented are Hollywood film sets from various films, adding a layer of meaning to the tranquillity depicted in the images and hinting at the hustle and bustle to come.

Using the stitching technique, I shot large-format negatives reminiscent of ultra-HD and the hyper-realism of modern film. These images were then re-framed to fit the standard format used by the film industry, resulting in panoramic compositions. By deliberately removing any explicit references to place, such as street names or typefaces, I sought to emphasise the post-modern, generic and globally recognisable (yet somewhat characterless) nature of the city’s spaces and architecture.
